    New compilation of Protoplanetary Nebula

Last months I started a new compilation of Protoplanetary Nebula (PPN)

First I only wanted to compile my past observations. But later I started a new selection of worthwhile objects. My main issue was to list objects which could be seen as laminar or detailed objects, also when big aperture is needed. I read several professional paper and measures within HST images to get the in my opinion very important information about the size and the brightness. When it is necessary I could add some objects in the future. Perhaps you know one or two other possible interesting objects?

The link you can find the compilation is as follows: http://www.deepsky-visuell.de/Projekte/PPN.htm

I hope you enjoy the list.

Nice list. I've only observed 10 of the objects; got some work to do this summer.

    cool stuff Uwe,
thx 4 your work. As one can see - a spectacular compilation of what it possible - worldbest skies and passionate observer given. I´ll try some of these at the one or other occasion.

image.jpegI'm at the Staunton River Star party. Had an excellent night. Was able to see 3 out of 4 PPN's attempted. For difficult targets I also use infrared eyepiece with filters. Observations verified with SkyTools 3.

18" f/3.5 dob, clear , cold, dry night. Good transparency, poor to very poor seeing limited useful magnifications

CRL 618 / Westbrook in Auriga
    170-250x not seen
Infrared 640nm+ : very dim threshold object, small elongated streak ~120x
Did not try filters, too dim

    Red Rectangle in Monoceros:
170-250x just a yellow-orange star. Magnifications above 170x just mush.
    IR 640nm+ : no nebula seen ~120x
Very late and low altitude. Will try again tonight soon after dark.

    Frosty Leo
170x : bright non stellar oval with brighter core, obvious target
IR 640nm: bright diamond shape, two flattened triangles separated by dark line, very similar to NGC 7026
H-alpha 6nm CCD filter: attenuated like other field stars, but no change in shape or detail
No attenuation with 740 and 900nm longpass filters
This pattern of easy visibility with small apertures, no enhancement with H-a, and strong IR emission is similar to NGC 7026, Egg Nebula and Minkowski Footprint in Cygnus.
Normal plantaries like M97 or M57 are weak in broadband IR, strongly enhanced in H-a, and invisible at longer wavelengths.

    CW Leo
170-250x : faint tiny star visible only in rare moments of good seeing
IR 640: obvious round non stellar disc, some slightly brighter and darker regions
    H-alpha 6nm CCD filter: invisible
No attenuation with 740 and 900nm IR longpass filters
    18" f/3.5 New Moon Dob,
    12.5? New Moon Dob
    8? f/5.5 Parallax Newt

what is an Infrared eyepiece? Is this some kind of EAA thing?

    Thanks for nice response.
John, do you use an electronic intensifier eyepiece for the IR observation? Could you see the star in CW Leo visual?

Yes, it is intensifier. A good tool for some targets.

I was able to see CW visually as a tiny faint star, somewhat challenging in the poor seeing. The magnitude given by Sky Safari 14.8 supports this. No nebulosity seen visually. I'm curious if the nebula is easier when CW is at maximum brightness.

For years my observing has been "no nebulosity seen visually " so I decided to change. Here is a good website about image intensified astronomy.

    Hi All,

In addition to the Uwe's list, I observed and sketched 17 PPNs, most of them belonging to that list, but listed through their IRAS number.
Details of the list of these 17 objects: http://www.deepsky-drawings.com/iras/dsdlang/en
And access to the sketches: http://www.deepsky-drawings.com/cate...ula/dsdlang/en

Just completed the upper list in the PPN project during the last Namibia trip to the Gamsberg. Most observations were made with an 28-inch and very good seeing condtions.

New object are: Hen 3-404, Hen 3-1379, IRAS 16342-3814, IRAS 16594-4656, PM 2-23 und PM 2-27
