NGC 7332/39
Galaxy Pair in Pegasus
22 37 24.5
23 47 54
Mags 11.1 (7332) & 12.2 (7339)
Placed perfectly overhead, this weeks OOTW is a rather anonymous pair of galaxies in Pegasus. Though NGC 7331 and its very famous Stephans Quintet lie about 10 degress to the north, NGC 7332 and 7339 should not be overlooked. Lying at nearly right angles to each other, this weeks OOTW provides the observer with a nice view that should be examined. NGC7332/39 have been observed in scopes down to 8", though to eek out any real detail you'll need upwards of a 15". Both galaxies offer a few similarities as well as some nice contrast to one another.
Classified as an edge-on peculiar lenticular, 7332 tends to exhibit a somewhat bright stellar core while its outer edges can be somewhat extended on a NE/SW line. There have been some accounts of observers seeing a sort of "rectangular" core to 7332.
6' to the east lies NGC 7339. A barred edge on spiral, NGC7339 exhibits an overall cigar shape and a beautiful dustlane in larger scopes. (think mini M82)
Spend some time with this pair and I'm sure you'll make out some of the subtle detail available to you!
