I have been going through Arp and Madore’s Souther Peculiar Galaxies Catalog looking for objects that I can observe from my home in Fort Davis Texas. I was surprised at how many objects are within reach from my +30 location. AM 1316-240 is a compact group with four galaxies that got my attention. I really like compact galaxies groups and wondered why Hickson did not include it in his catalog.

The big edge on galaxy is ESO 508-43 the fuzz ball to the right is LEDA 790153 the small edge on on the top left is 2MFGC 10641 and the little galaxies below it is not cataloged. I was surprised that this group is higher than M83 and should be in reach for most observers. I have not tried this group yet but plan on observing it when the moon gets out of the way. I hope you will try it too. I do not know of any observations of it yet. I will post what I see next week.

Give It a GO!
Good Luck and Great Viewing

That's a great find, Jimi..!

The li'l one is PGC4681588 / 6dFJ1319096-242505. Here it is in Hyperleda (http://atlas.obs-hp.fr/hyperleda/ledacat.cgi?6dFJ1319096-242505&ob=ra) and it's mentioned here (https://cseligman.com/text/atlas/pgc46.htm#:~:text=is%20known%20about-,6dFJ1319096%2D242505,-(%22PGC%204681588%22)%2C%20the), too, but that seems to be all the info to be found.

I will piece together a guide tomorrow.

Jimi didn't mention the location but the AM 1316-240 group is only 16' W of the spiral NGC 5085. Also nearby is the overlapping Arp-Madore AM 1316-241[/URL] pair (HST image (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/05/Hubble_Interacting_Galaxy_AM_1316-241_%282008-04-24%29.jpg/1024px-Hubble_Interacting_Galaxy_AM_1316-241_%282008-04-24%29.jpg)) and more.
