Portland XVI Alt-Az Workshop

October 27 – October 29, 2023 Portland, Oregon

The 16th annual Portland Alt-Az Workshop will be held Saturday October 28 and Sunday October 29 at Dan Gray's Technical Marine Service (TMS) plant. An informal BBQ on Friday evening, October 27 will also be held at TMS for those who attend in-person.

BBQ’s will also be available for Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday lunch. A $5.00 donation for each meal is requested to help pay for the food – and feel free to bring your own. A limited continental breakfast will be available Saturday and Sunday mornings, but bring your own coffee if you can’t live without it.

The Alt-Az Workshop is held in a relaxed, informal environment. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, discuss the presentations, and examine the telescopes that will be on display.

There is no registration fee for the workshop, and the only requirement is to inform the chairperson (hbanich at gmail dot com) if you plan to attend in-person.

Just like in 2022, this will be a hybrid workshop - we’ll have both in-person and Zoom-only presentations. All presentations will be seen live via Zoom to all attendees, and recordings will be available on YouTube soon after the workshop is finished.

Throughout its history, the Alt-Az Workshop has brought together advanced amateurs, professional telescope makers and astronomers in an informal collaboration. Our goal has always been to adapt technologies used in the world’s largest telescopes for the design and construction of low cost, high performance 1.0 to 2.0-meter amateur telescopes. We’ve never been closer to achieving this goal.

Dr. Russ Genet founded the workshop, Howard Banich is the chair, and Dan Gray is the local host.

Hi everyone,

The 2023 Alt-Az Workshop will begin Saturday morning, October 28th, and I hope many of you will be able to tune in. The Zoom meeting links, along with the topics to be presented in each session, are shown below.

Although I never discount the possibility of technical difficulties, the plan is to livestream and record each session on YouTube for those who can't watch the presentations in real-time.

We'll have a mix of in-person and Zoom-only presentations again this year, and all will be livestreamed and recorded.

There's no registration fee, although we ask for a $5 donation to cover the cost of each bbq that in-person attendees partake in. Feel free to bring your own food if you prefer.

The Friday, October 27 bbq for in-person attendees will begin at 6:00pm at the new TMS location at 6650 N. Basin Ave, Suite F, Portland, OR.

I'm looking forward to another fascinating Workshop, and hope to see many of you there!

The YouTube videos of the 2023 Alt Az Workshop are now posted (https://studio.youtube.com/channel/UC9qZYa-xaDthv7-F_0vO6GQ/videos/upload?filter=%5B%5D&sort=%7B%22columnType%22%3A%22date%22%2C%22sortOrd er%22%3A%22DESCENDING%22%7D), and I've added the start times for each presentation in the description of each video. That will make it easier to find the individual presentations in each of the four sessions.

You'll note that the 2023 sessions are not listed in order, but at least they're at the top of the page. If I can figure out how to reorder them, I will, but I don't think this isn't a fatal flaw for now.

Again, my thanks to all the presenters, and to everyone who attended in-person and online - I think this year's Workshop was another wonderful success. If you have ideas about how to improve the Workshop starting in 2024, please contact Mel or myself - and if you weren't able to tune in to the presentations live, please see my introduction (beginning of the morning session of day 1) and my closing comments and discussion (at the end of day 2 afternoon session) to hear some preliminary ideas that are being discussed.

Important update to the YouTube link - below is the correct link to the 2023 Alt Az Workshop videos:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiZnykkxPITT7UnbMXhWgpCkpT1NCAcA0&si=0DyIT-kaZKDPo6GB

The link in my message from yesterday is for my YouTube studio page, which I now know is accessible only to me! Sorry about that - for as little as I know about Zoom, I know even less about YouTube...

I've put together a YouTube playlist for each of the four years the Alt Az Workshop has used Zoom and YouTube. We started using Zoom and YouTube in 2020 so this was our fourth year of videos.. The link below will make it easy to find - and enjoy - all the Alt Az Workshop videos in one spot, plus I added a playlist of the video shorts of Mel Bartels spray silvering his 30-inch meniscus mirror. Here's the link:
