IC 5285

Pegasus
RA 23 06 58
Dec + 22 56 14

Type S? Ring

Mag 13.6B
——————————————
IC 5285 is an unusual ring galaxy that is not well known or studied. It was found by Javelle with the 30” Nice refractor in 1903. It is at a distance of 250 million light years from us. The outer ring appears to be slightly disturbed but I am not sure what is causing it.

I have only one observation of IC 5285 on a not so good night with soft seeing. I was unable to see the other ring at 488X on this night several years ago. I have it on my list to try again this fall.

8.6’ Northeast of IC 5285 is the disturbed galaxy NGC 7489 found by Lassell in 1863 with a 48” reflector. I was not aware of this unusual galaxy on my last observation. On the North side of the galaxy is a straight line of what appears to be star forming knots or it could be a edge on galaxy? I am anxious to see if this feature is visible. Straight lines in galaxies are a most unusual feature to see in galaxies.

I did not know until I was looking for images of these galaxies that the area is full of IFN. I have posted a deep image below that shows it well.

Next Time Out Give the unusual IC 5285 A Go!

Good Luck and Great Viewing!

IC 5285 looks to be double-ringed with a pretty distinct inner ring! My only observation (of both) goes back to 1984 using my basic 13.1" Odyssey I. Time to revisit!

Rick Johnson imaged the pair, as well as the edge-on CGCG 475-37 to the south, back in 2014. All 3 have a very similar redshift

Same here with it's time to revisit. Back in 2013 at 337x and a 22", I could see the galaxy with no problem, but did not see the ring (it's altitude at the time of observation was 44 degrees). It is on my list to view again at higher magnification and at an altitude of at least the same as before, this year.

No sketch this time but two entries with 27-inch.

27", 293x, S III, NELM 6m5+: bright, stellar nucleus; small, somewhat elongated surface around nucleus; ring indicated as a very faint glow without showing the ring fragments

27", 172x-419x, SIII, NELM 6m5+: despite good transparency no sign of the ring
